Iced Out: How Immigration Enforcement Has Interfered with Workers’ Rights

[Excerpt] In recent years, however, our federal government’s approach to immigration enforcement has severely interfered with the protection of labor rights for immigrant workers. The single-minded focus on immigration enforcement without regard to violations of workplace laws has enabled employers with rampant labor and employment violations to profit by employing workers who are terrified to complain about substandard wages, unsafe conditions, and lack of benefits, or to demand their right to bargain collectively

The equivalence between the absence of arbitrage and the existence of an equivalent martingale measure fails when an infinite number of trading dates is considered. By enlarging the set of states of nature and the probability measure through a projective system of topological spaces and Radon measures, we characterize the absence of arbitrage when the time set is countable

There are a few books written by José Jiménez Lozano among these, Maestro Huidobro is considered to be a short story or 'fable'. All of them share the singularity of its pervaded symbolic characteristic. In this essay after a critique/review reading related to the chapter " La casa " by Maestro Huidobro based on literary analysis of the Poetry of Imagination. The house, as his own private space is vital to understand the character's imagination in José Jiménez Lozano's short stories

Have Spanish companies built greater entrepreneurship after privatization?

This study analyses some of the strategic and organizational changes experienced in public firms following privatization in its double facet: sale of companies and deregulation. Specifically, we analyse the process of innovation in terms of products, processes and organization. We also look into the development of new businesses and strategic renewal, which in the end shape the entrepreneurial capacity of a company. A sample of Spanish firms which were privatized between 1985 and 2000 shows that after privatization, these companies have experienced a significant increase in entrepreneurship. These changes are even more appreciable when a high sector competition is added to the ownership shift. Once they join the private sector, their level of product, process and organizational innovation is higher. They also develop new businesses at national level, reinforce their international activity and embark on strategic renewal processes by shedding the lesser profitable businesses and modifying their competitive strategy so as to gain efficiency

Infectivity decline of an RNA plant virus by increased mutagenesis supports the lethal defection model in vivo

Lethal mutagenesis is a new antiviral therapy based on increasing the mutation rate by using mutagenic base and nucleoside analogues whose molecular mechanisms are not fully understood. Most of the research has been conducted on animal RNA viruses in cell culture and, to a lesser extent, in vivo. There is experimental evidence supporting the model of lethal defection for lethal mutagenesis of RNA viruses. In this model, viral genomes with a low degree of mutation and low specific infectivity, termed "defectors", exert an interfering activity leading to virus loss. Lethal mutagenesis of plant viruses has not been addressed yet despite being excellent in vivo model systems that develop systemic infections, undergo rapid bottlenecks and pose no ethical issues. Here, we address lethal mutagenesis in vivo of Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV), a single-stranded positive RNA virus of 6.4 Kb. Nicotiana tabacum plants cultured in vitro were treated with 25, 50 and 100 ”g/ml of the base analogue 5-fluorouracil (FU) and 24 h later were inoculated with 50 lesion forming units (lfu) of TMV. We analyzed the infectivity, viral load and mutant spectra of viral populations after 5 and 10 days of treatment, as well as of populations that went 10 days of treatment followed by 21 days of ex vitro growth in the absence of FU. The results show that TMV infectivity decreases when treated with 50 and 100 ”g/ml FU for 10 days. TMV mutagenized populations grown without FU reach infectivity values higher than untreated populations. Predominant mutations in FU-treated populations with decreased infectivity at 10 dpi are U→C, A→G and G→A transitions, which are expected due to the action of FU. TMV replication is not affected by FU at any dose and there are no imbalances of ribonucleotide triphosphate pools measured by HPLC. No differences in mutation frequencies and Shannon Entropies between control and FU-treated populations with declined infectivity were found. However, we did found a dose-dependent decrease of specific infectivity in FU-treated populations, but not in untreated samples, as well as dominance of molecules with a low degree of mutation. Specific infectivity recovered to control levels after 21 days of growth without the analogue. Altogether, our results suggest that TMV defector molecules mediate the decrease in TMV infectivity. This is the first report that addresses the molecular basis of lethal defection in vivo using an RNA plant virus.Junta de AndalucĂa (P09-CVI-5428 y P10-CVI-6561), Plan Nacional I+D+i (BFU2007-65080 BMC) y Universidad de MĂĄlaga (Plan propio

Tense ocurrence in economic and bussines journalistic articles compared to general-topic ones

Segones Jornades de Foment de la Investigació de la FCHS (Any 1996-1997)The choice of tenses in discourse on the part of its producer responds , among other factors, to the rhetorical function that lies beyond the writer’s or the speaker’s words. However, it would be wrong to think that a piece of written discourse, an article in this case, can be identified with a specific rhetorical function. On the contrary, many different rhetorical functions can occur coherently in a single article. We can only consider a rhetorical function as dominant, if it really is, when we analyse the different parts of the article. In fact it is by means of these rhetorical functions that we can attempt a coherent division of an article into parts. In this sense, this paper aims at a study of the occurrence of tenses in six articles of approximately the same extension. Three of the articles correspond to business and economic contents, whereas the other three talk about topics of general interest. Tense occurrence has been analysed in two different ways : in the first place, all the articles have been divided into different parts according to the rhetorical function which proved dominant in each case and tenses have been counted in each part. Secondly, tense occurrence has been compared in economic and general articles. It goes without saying that the number of different tenses in the article is going to be the same from both perspectives. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to compare economic and general articles in terms of tense occurrence in an attempt to throw some light upon the question of whether tense choice is more dependent on subject matter or on rhetorical function. Moreover, we will be referring to the pedagogical implications related to the conclusions

Thermography and Sonic Anemometry to Analyze Air Heaters in Mediterranean Greenhouses

    Get PDF
The present work has developed a methodology based on thermography and sonic anemometry for studying the microclimate in Mediterranean greenhouses equipped with air heaters and polyethylene distribution ducts to distribute the warm air. Sonic anemometry allows us to identify the airflow pattern generated by the heaters and to analyze the temperature distribution inside the greenhouse, while thermography provides accurate crop temperature data. Air distribution by means of perforated polyethylene ducts at ground level, widely used in Mediterranean-type greenhouses, can generate heterogeneous temperature distributions inside the greenhouse when the system is not correctly designed. The system analyzed in this work used a polyethylene duct with a row of hot air outlet holes (all of equal diameter) that expel warm air toward the ground to avoid plant damage. We have observed that this design (the most widely used in Almería’s greenhouses) produces stagnation of hot air in the highest part of the structure, reducing the heating of the crop zone. Using 88 kW heating power (146.7 W∙m−2) the temperature inside the greenhouse is maintained 7.2 to 11.2 °C above the outside temperature. The crop temperature (17.6 to 19.9 °C) was maintained above the minimum recommended value of 10 °C
